History

The relief association of Rantasalmi Upper Secondary School - Rantasalmen lukion kannatusyhdistys - founded a private school in May 1962. This was a great cultural achievement.

The school was privately funded till 1972 when the local government began to maintain it. In the same year they started to offer lunch to the students. The school moved next to Central school three years later, when the new schoolhouse was completed.

In the early days teaching was a very challenging experience: "Motivating this unsorted group to study energetically enough in order to achieve generally acceptable results in matriculation examination is an utterly hard mission, no matter what kind of method is applied."

In the term 1984-1985 there were an entrepreneurship course. This was the first school course in this field in Finland.

Local Okobank, Rantasalmen Osuuspankki, has stayed as one of the most generous sponsors of our school. Rantasalmen Osuuspankki celebrated its 100^th anniversary in 2004. In the very same event the bank announced a start of a foundation and donated a remarkable amount of money to this foundation. One goal of this foundation is to certify the functioning of our Upper Secondary School. - This is again a one noticeable voice about how important it is to the locals that there are opportunities to get education in your own commune.

In this diagram you can see how many students have received their matriculation examination here in our school in the past few years. During its first 20 years this school had more than 470 students who completed their matriculation examination, so after a short calculation, this school has educated at least 1078 sons and daughters.
